Riga, Latvia, was one of my preferred cities on my trip through the Baltic countries. Aside from a stunning medieval old town packed with winding alleyways, lovely squares, and canals, also a neighborhood impressed me a lot that is known as Quiet Center, world famous for its architecture from the early 1900s.

Stroll Over Daugava River

It was a beautiful sunny day in Riga on Thursday, September 4th. My hotel (Island Hotel) was on the other side of the Daugava river next to Olympia Mall. So to get to the stunning medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about a 10 – 15 minutes walk. However, it’s not just a simple walk but a great panoramic view of the Old Riga skyline while crossing over the Vansu bridge.

Plan a Self-guided Walking Tour

Even though I planned to do a self-guided old town walking tour, I still bought a day pass for public transportation. Keeping it handy in case my legs give up on me at the end of the day; moreover, it cost only 2.50 euros.

It’s been 30 years since I last rode an Electric Trolley Bus in Moscow. Squeezing me into a crowded bus was not that difficult in my experience. The bus stop was across the hotel, heading toward the old city crossing over the river; the first stop after the Vansu bridge was where I got off and started my solo walking tour.

Check Out Old Town Riga

I saw many interesting restaurants on my way and wanted to stop by. Still, instead, I grabbed a few delicious-looking wursts (local sausages) from a street-side vendor and headed towards the park, grabbed a seat next to the canal, and spent hours in the green, people-watching and having my food at the same time.

Things To Do and See

The best way to explore the stunning medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is by taking a walking tour. I did my research, so I took a self-guided tour, but guided tours are also available if you are out of time. I have walked through the park, narrow streets, alley in the old town, and wide open squares surrounded by beautiful old but well-maintained buildings that gave me enough subjects to keep my camera busy and encouraged me to keep going throughout the day.

Latvian National Theater

The 1919s theater is a great place to start your walking tour. If interested, you may find interesting performances. In addition, it regularly offers discounted ticket prices for different groups of audiences.

Kronvalda Park

This beautiful park is worth visiting, with a canal running through and a bridge to cross. In fact, you can spend a day out here relaxing in the beautiful green, away from the noise. This place was a gift from Tsar Nicholas I to the Riga German riflemen on the right side of the canal.

St. James’s Cathedral, Riga

Even though it is one of the smallest cathedrals among the four old town churches, it can still be well seen from a distance due to its 123 meters high tower. For a 360 view of Old Riga, you can take the elevator to the top viewing floor. The cost is €9, but the views are absolutely worth it.

Take a walk on Aldaru street, and you will find the remains of Riga’s Old City walls at the Swedish Gate. This gate was built in 1698 when Sweden invaded and took over the city, but this is the only structure that has been conserved.
