A great day trip location from Sofia

Are you in Sofia and looking for a day trip location that will blow your mind away then I would absolutely recommend the Rila Monastery. It is the most visited cultural sites of Bulgaria is the UNESCO WorldHerige Site of Rila Monastery in a deep valley of the Rilska River. Only 100 km away from the Capital Sofia one of the most important 10th-century historical monuments definitely worth a visit.

Getting There

There are several ways to get there from Sofia. You can take a guided tour book your trip online or from your hotel. But I drove my rental car there at my own pace, and the driving experience was one of the highlights of my Bulgaria trip.

On my way a quick stop at The Boyana Church

On my way to Rila Monastery I made a stop at The Boyana Church, a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated on the outskirts of Sofia. The building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is absolutely beautiful inside the church, but no one is allowed to take pictures and it is strictly enforced. It is a must-see site in Sofia.

Driving experience

The drive from Sofia to the Rila Monastery and the surrounding mountains is scenic, challenging and fun too, the traffic was smooth, did not have any problem getting there.

On my way to Rila Monastery, I was able to stop and enjoy the beautiful roadside landscapes, capture beautiful pictures and meet local people, all these would have been not possible if I was not driving a car.

Arrival at Rila Monastery

The Rila Monastery complex in a deep valley of the Rilska River is a wonderful, picturesque and architectural masterpiece that is unlike anything I have ever encountered.

While visiting the Rila Monastery complex including a church, museums, and much more. Visitors also explore St Ivan’s cave, where the monastery founder lived.

Lunch at a local restaurant

I had a fresh grilled trout that was caught from the Rilska river running nearby. The home-style food was delicious along with a local beer, also the traditional house backed bread was awesome too.
