Irrawaddy, also spelled the Ayeyarwady river, flows from north to south through historical towns like Bagan and Mandalay. It is the largest river and most important commercial waterway in Myanmar. The sunset river cruise is perfect for snapping the scenery along the banks of the Ayeyarwady River, watching wildlife, or simply unwinding in the middle of the river.

On my third day traveling through beautiful Bagan, we took a boat trip in the Ayeyarwady river. After returning from half a day trip to Mount Popa. I was a little tired from climbing the mountain to a Buddhist temple at the summit. Therefore, I was looking for something relaxing to do in the late afternoon. However, it did not come to my mind until my friend asked me if I wanted to go for a boat ride in the Irrawaddy river. It would be absolutely ridiculous if I missed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: the boat ride and the opportunity to enjoy the sunset from the same boat in the evening.

Irrawaddy River Sunset Boat Trip

Our driver dropped us off at the river bank. I saw a few makeshift restaurants lined up around the river bank. Also, many Longtail boats are waiting for the same ride we plan to take. It looks like it’s a popular event among Bagan visitors. We had enough time in hand before starting our evening river cruise, so we had some typical local tea and loaded up supplies for the trip.

Sunset Viewing From The Boat

We rented a boat after price negotiation with the boat operator, and off we cruised the mighty river. In the beginning, getting used to the sound of the junky long tail motor, the fume, and the intense gasoline smell was a little irritating. Moreover, the ailing sun shone directly on my face in a hot, humid (really hot 45 C/113 F) environment. But in the end, it definitely paid off. Finally, our captain shut down the engine in the middle of the river and waited for the sun to set.

Sunset Boat Trip for the stunning views from the Ayeyarwaddy River

It was a stunning scene away from home on a boat and watching the sunset. The colorful sky and the reflection on the water were unforgettable and mind-blowing. Don’t forget to bring food, drink, and other supplies for a lovely dinner on the boat while enjoying the sunset.
