The colorful Brighton Bathing Boxes in Brighton Beach are one of the most photographed sites in Melbourne among locals and tourists alike. The Beach houses have more than 100 years of history behind them. They are located about 12 km south of Federation Square in one of the Melbourn’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

Beach Boxes in Melbourne

I did not know what to expect when Brian told me that he was taking me to show some beach houses, which may be interesting to me. Green Point, Brighton Beach with its lawns, gardens, and vista of Port Phillip Bay and the Melbourne City skyline, the area has always been a major attraction for residents and visitors, but I actually did not research that ahead of my trip.

Boxes with 100 years of history behind them

It was a beautiful late afternoon, was a great experience to see all those beautiful and colorful beach bathing boxes lined up from the far distance. I discovered that the Brighton Beach Boxes represent an iconic symbol of this popular beach in Port Phillip Bay. Individuals own some of the boxes, while the government owns others. Some boxes are privately owned, and the government owns some. If a private owner wants to sell their box, the government buys it to preserve its historical importance and prevent any harm to its heritage.

The box owners aren’t even permitted repainting their boxes to a different outside color that is already displayed, nor remodeling is allowed.

Getting to Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes

Public Transport – Sandringham metro line (Green) takes about 25 minutes from Flinders Street Railway Station to Brighton Beach Station, then another 12 minutes walk (1 km) to to the Beach.

The beautiful view of city skylines and the pine trees make the Gardens a perfect place for photographers. It is the perfect place for car parking or a quick stop when you are walking from the Station to the colorful bathing boxes.
